Stage Blood Effects - Mehron On Centerstage

New York Fashion Week is soon upon us.  Perfect timing for a new show in Brooklyn that takes its plot from the stars of the runway.  The House of von Macrame is a new pop musical playing at The Bushwick Starr.  This production by Brooklyn based the Management is a thriller about a slasher who targets models and an eccentric designer who may or may not be the culprit.

The show takes the cutthroat modeling scene to a whole new level!
When you think cutthroat, typically intense competition comes to mind.  Well, think again.  For The House of von Macrame the term is literal!  You will see plenty of throat slashing gore created by special effects designer Waldo Warshaw.  He is in charge of determining where the blood from the slashed victims comes from, how fast it spurts and how it splashes onto the props and costumes.  Oh, and he also was in charge of selecting which stage blood to use for his effects . . .

As noted in a recent New York Times Theater piece, "Mr. Warshaw buys blood from Mehron, a theatrical makeup company in Rockland County, N.Y., that keeps its pigmentation and weight even when diluted. . . . The key to convincing-looking blood is viscosity. Watered-down blood flies easily, but if it's too runny, it looks weakly atomized when airborn. Warshaw's Patented Stage Blood Effects

The incredible stage blood effects in The House of von Macrame will be delivered using Warshaw's own patented system, which is a twist on how stage blood is typically released.  Usually the actor creates blood spurting from a pellet inside a garment or hidden somewhere on the stage.  In Warshaw's system, the blood is inside the actor's shirt, but it is activated by a remote control and strewn on the wall by the actor quickly turning at the same time - in essence the actor is the paintbrush.  Mehron is excited to be part of this patented system!

Mehron offers several different blood products:

Stage Blood, available in 0.5, 1, 4.5, 9, and 16 ounce bottles as well as a gallon container. Because it is non-toxic it can be used in and around the mouth.  It also washes off easily with soap and water.

Squirt Blood, available in 0.5, 2, and 9 ounce and gallon bottles.  In veinous and arterial colors, this is a great product for gushing blood effects.  Water based, it is easily removable from hair and costumes.

Blood Capsules, for use with Stage Blood, it is non-toxic, edible, and quickly dissolved.

Coagulated Blood Gel is used throughout the entertainment industry for its realistic look.
